Dan Nhi (Erhu)
The Erhu (also known as Dan Co) is a Vietnamese two-stringed bowed musical instrument. In Viet Nam, there are the same instruments as the Erhu commonly used among the Viet ethnic group and several national minorities such as Co-ke of Muong people, Cua of Tay peole, Xi- Xo-Lo of Thai people, etc. This instrument produces smooth and hummed sound with beautiful timbre. Especially, The Erhu music is rich in expressiveness. In drawing the bow, the player uses various techniques, including legato, vibrato, staccato; combined with his fingering of the strings he can produce trills, glissando, rapid runs, etc.
The Erhu can be played in solo or as part of traditional orchestras such as Bat Am, Cremmonial music and songs, Tai Tu, Classical drama, traditional operetta, Reformed theatre, etc.
